5 Royal Facts About Queen Victoria’s Life and Love

Queen Victoria is one of Britain’s most iconic monarchs, known for her long reign, deep devotion to her husband, and influence on royal traditions. Here are five fascinating facts about her life and love.

She Became Queen at Just 18

Victoria inherited the throne in 1837 after the death of her uncle, King William IV. Despite her young age, she quickly established herself as a strong and independent ruler, determined to govern in her own right.

She Proposed to Her Husband

As Queen, Victoria had to be the one to propose to Prince Albert. Following royal protocol, she popped the question on 15 October 1839, and they married in 1840. Their love story became one of the most famous in royal history.

She Popularised White Wedding Dresses

Before Victoria’s wedding, brides typically wore their best dress, regardless of colour. Her choice of a white gown set a trend that continues to this day, making white the traditional colour for brides around the world.

She Had Nine Children and 42 Grandchildren

Victoria and Albert had a large family, and their descendants married into many European royal households. This earned Victoria the nickname "Grandmother of Europe" and linked her lineage to numerous ruling families.

She Was Devastated by Albert’s Death

After Prince Albert died in 1861, Victoria never fully recovered. She wore black mourning attire for the rest of her life and withdrew from public duties for many years. Her grief left a lasting mark on her reign.
