Instead, he convinced the Devil to transform into a coin that would cover the costs. However, once the Devil complied, Jack cunningly stashed the coin next to a silver cross, preventing the Devil from reverting to his original form.
Trickery and Redemption
Jack eventually released the Devil, but not without setting some conditions. He made the Devil promise not to trouble him for a year and that, if Jack were to pass away, the Devil could not claim his soul. The Devil agreed, and the two parted ways.
The following year, Jack's cleverness got the best of him once more. He lured the Devil into a tree to pick a piece of fruit. While the Devil was aloft, Jack carved a cross into the tree's bark, ensuring that the Devil couldn't descend until he vowed not to harass Jack for another decade.
The Fate of Stingy Jack
Jack's story took a darker turn when he met his end. As the legend goes, his unsavory reputation led to a divine denial of entry to heaven. But the Devil, bound by the terms of their agreements and still fuming over the tricks Jack played, wouldn't allow him into hell either. Instead, he banished Jack into the inky blackness of the night, offering only a burning coal to light his way.
Jack ingeniously carved out a turnip, placing the burning coal inside, and has been wandering the Earth ever since, casting an eerie glow as he roams. The Irish, in honor of this ghostly wanderer, began to refer to him as "Jack of the Lantern," and eventually, "Jack O'Lantern."
